The story

Manikeswari Temple in Bhawanipatna, Kalahandi district, Odisha, is dedicated to the goddess Manikeshwari, the Ishta Devi, or chosen deity, of the Nagavanshi Kshatriyas. As a goddess of wealth, or manik, she has been tied to Kalahandi's history since the 10th century. The present temple was begun by Udit Narayan Deo, who laid its foundation, and completed in 1947 by Brajamohan Deo.

Dussehra is marked here with animal sacrifice, a ritual that has been recorded on film. On the navami tithi of Dussehra each year the Chhatar Yatra is held, when devotees whose wishes have been granted offer animals in the goddess's name. Karlapat, known for its wildlife, lies near the temple.
