The story

Immaculate Heart Church, formally the Church of Immaculate Heart of Mary, stands on Kunjpura Road in Karnal, Haryana, near National Highway 1 and next to St. Theresa's Convent School. INTACH, the national heritage trust, has declared it a historical monument. Bishop John Burke of Shimla laid the foundation stone on 26 August 1962, and Bishop Alfred Fernandez blessed the finished church on 22 August 1968.

The building follows the Victorian style, with an altar, baptistry, pulpit and two vestries. Velvet curtains adorn the pulpit and the floor is of geometrical tiles. The main hall covers 1,325 square feet, within walls 2 feet thick, and the bell is another feature. A grotto of Mary stands at the entrance to the church boundary, and a ground behind the church is used for ceremonies. The parish of about 100 families includes people from Jharkhand, Punjab and South India.
