The story

This Kurukshetra temple, also called Shri Devi Koop Temple, belongs to Maa Bhadrakali, regarded as one of Kali's eight forms, and is counted among the 51 Shakti Peeths. In the legend of Sati, her right ankle fell into a well on this spot when Vishnu's Sudarshan Chakra cut her body apart; a large white marble lotus now marks the place inside the temple.

Tradition says the Pandavas prayed here before the Kurukshetra war and came back after their victory to offer horses of terracotta and metal. Devotees whose wishes are granted still leave miniature horses, which fill the temple. Krishna and Balram are also said to have had their mundan here, so families bring children for the same rite. Worship on Saturdays is considered especially fruitful, and Navratri and Durga Puja bring elaborate decoration.
