01 — The story

The story

Hiranagar Fort, also called Jasmergarh Fort, stands in Hiranagar, a town in Kathua district, Jammu and Kashmir. Raja Hira Singh, a Dogra noble and nephew of Maharaja Gulab Singh, built it in the mid-19th century atop a hillock, as a military outpost and administrative centre. The town was founded around the same time and carries his name.

Built mainly of lakhori bricks, the fort is now partly in ruins, with remnants of a palace and prison complex. Its raised ramparts and surviving walls still give wide views over the plains, and local authorities have lately begun repairs to walls and pathways. A temple to Goddess Mahakali within the complex remains active, and devotees visit particularly during festivals such as Navratri.
