The story

Hinglajgarh is an ancient fortress at Navali in Mandsaur district, Madhya Pradesh, named after the goddess Hinglaj Devi, whose temple stands in its southern part. The Chambal and two of its streams, the Mandaleshwari and Txakeshwar nullahs, almost surround the site, which is thickly vegetated and has been called a fortress city. Statues from the Gupta to the Paramara periods, some of the 4th–5th centuries, come from here; several are in the Central Museum at Indore, and a Nandi and an Uma-Maheshwar were shown at an exhibition in Washington.

The Paramaras renovated it in the 12th century, the Hada king Halu took it in 1281, and it later passed to the Chandrawats of Rampura. Ahilya Bai Holkar won it in 1773 and rebuilt the fort and its temples, and Yashwantrao Holkar later revamped it again. Inside are four gates, the Surajkund reservoir, the small Rani Mahal, the Darbar Kaksha courthouse, the Fateh Burj watchtower, two signal towers and temples to Shiva, Rama, Hanuman and Hinglaj Devi.
