The story

About 100 km from Mandsaur, the Dharmarajeshwara temple is a site cut into the rock in Madhya Pradesh. The well-preserved Hindu shrine has been compared with the rock-cut monuments of Ellora in Maharashtra.

The complex dates to the 8th century. It was first a shrine to Vishnu and was later remodelled as a Shiva temple, which is why the sanctum holds both an image of Harihara and a Shivalinga. Mahashivaratri is the main festival held here.
