01 — The story

The story

The Baroli Temples, also spelt Badoli, form one of the oldest temple groups in Rajasthan and lie in Chittorgarh district. They were built in the 10th and 11th centuries under the Gurjara-Pratihara empire and honour several Hindu deities.

The shrines are known for their carved walls showing mythological scenes, celestial figures and everyday life, and for their tall shikharas. In 1998 a stone Nataraja was stolen from the complex; it was later traced to a private collector in London and has since been recovered. Chittorgarh Fort, the Meera Temple and Bhainsrorgarh Wildlife Sanctuary are among the sights nearby, and the cooler months from October to March are the most comfortable for a visit.
