01 — The story

The story

Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary covers about 15,290 hectares around the town of Bassi, roughly 25 km from Chittorgarh. Its green slopes and lakes support forests of dhok, salar, churel and butea, along with medicinal herbs and flowering plants.

Wildlife includes leopards, sloth bears, jackals and antelopes, and migratory birds arrive every year, so it is a good area for birdwatching. The Orai Dam in the sanctuary acts as a reservoir where animals come to drink. About 5 km away stands Bassi Fort, built in the 16th century and linked in local lore with the warrior Thakur Jaimal; it now operates as a heritage hotel.
