The Hill Fort at Kesroli in Alwar district dates from the 14th century. Its builders were displaced by Khanzadas who had converted to Islam around the middle of that century, and the fort changed hands many times before returning to the Rajputs in 1775, when the princely state of Alwar was founded. It flourished under Ranawat Thakur Bhawani Singh (1882–1934).
The fort is built on dark hornstone breccia, and its walls and seven turrets stand 50–65 m over the surrounding fields. Aman Nath and Francis Wacziarg of Neemrana Hotels led its restoration, keeping the coursed sandstone ramparts, arched verandahs and tall arched gateways while furnishing the rooms in colonial and Indian style. It now operates as a 31-room heritage hotel.
