Gurdwara Qila Lohgarh Sahib stands inside the old walled city of Amritsar, close to Lohgarh Gate. After the execution of Guru Arjan Dev, his son Guru Hargobind began to arm the Sikh community and, following his father's instruction, raised a small fort on this spot. Its name, Lohgarh, means iron fort, and it served as a training base for his saint-soldiers.
The site is tied to the Battle of Amritsar, the first armed clash between Guru Hargobind and Mughal troops. It is said to have started during a hunt, when the Guru's hawk brought down a hawk belonging to Shah Jahan that had been a present from the Persian ruler. The Mughals then attacked Lohgarh, which some 700 Sikhs defended. Fighting later moved to the place now marked by Gurdwara Sangrana Sahib at Chabba, where Mukhlis Khan challenged the Guru to single combat and was defeated.
