01 — The story

The story

Gurdwara Kaulsar Sahib, also called Gurdwara Bibi Kaulan Ji, stands behind the Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar beside the Kaulsar, one of the city's five sacred sarovars. It is named after Bibi Kaulan, a devotee of Guru Hargobind known for the kirtan she sang each evening.

She was born a Muslim, the daughter of the Qazi of Lahore, and her devotion to the Guru led her father to brand her an infidel and order her death. The Sufi saint Mian Mir, also living in Lahore, helped her escape and placed her under Guru Hargobind's protection, and she spent the rest of her life in service and meditation. Digging of the tank, supervised by Baba Budha, started in 1624 and finished in 1627. Guru Hargobind is said to have asked devotees to bathe in the Kaulsar before going on to the Harmandir Sahib.
