01 — The story

The story

Gurdwara Guru Ka Mahal lies a short walk from the Golden Temple in old Amritsar. It began in 1573 as a modest house built by Guru Ram Das, the fourth Guru and founder of the city, and was gradually enlarged into the present shrine.

Several events of early Sikh history took place in this house. Guru Arjan Dev was married here and later installed as the fifth Guru, and both Baba Atal Rai and Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Guru, were born under its roof. The building has three levels. The Guru Granth Sahib rests on a raised platform on the ground floor, while the basement holds a quiet room where the Gurus are said to have meditated and composed hymns.
