The story

Gurdwara Chheharta Sahib is in Chheharta, a village roughly 7 km from central Amritsar. Guru Arjan Dev had a large well sunk here to celebrate the birth of his son and successor, Hargobind, the sixth Sikh Guru. Six Persian wheels were set around it to lift water faster, and the place took its name from this arrangement; the wheels are believed by many to have healing power.

The well has since been covered, but its water still feeds the main tank and the wheels survive in good condition. The complex covers about six acres inside a wall, with a square sanctum in the middle of the diwan hall under a lotus-shaped dome and gilded finial. Two Nishan Sahib flagpoles about 25 m tall stand in front. Large gatherings are held on the fifth day of the bright fortnight each month, and the biggest is the Basant Panchami fair in Magh (January-February), known for kite flying, yellow turbans and free medical camps.
