The story

Gurdwara Baba Deep Singh Ji, also known as Gurdwara Shahidan Sahib, stands outside the Chattiwind Gate of old Amritsar. It marks the place where Baba Deep Singh, one of the most honoured Sikh martyrs, fell in 1757 while fighting to protect the Golden Temple from an Afghan army.

He led a large body of Sikhs against a much bigger force and, though mortally wounded in the neck, kept fighting towards Amritsar, having vowed to die within the precincts of the shrine; he collapsed near the holy pool. Sardar Jassa Singh Ramgarhia later raised a memorial at the spot, which the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee rebuilt as the present gurdwara in the 1920s. The building is of marble and granite, with a rectangular hall, an ornate main entrance and a gold-leaf dome.
