The story

Gurdwara Baba Atal Sahib is a nine-storey tower just south of the Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar, near the pilgrim lodgings, and is among the tallest structures in the city. It is a memorial to Baba Atal Rai, son of Guru Hargobind, the sixth Sikh Guru; its nine floors stand for the nine years of his life.

Tradition says that at nine Atal Rai brought his friend Mohan, a widow's son, back to life after the boy died suddenly. Guru Hargobind rebuked him for going against the natural order, and Atal Rai offered his own life in return, sitting in meditation until he died. A samadhi was raised where he was cremated, which was converted into a gurdwara during the late 18th century. Its langar is well known and draws many pilgrims and poor people, and it has given rise to a saying in Amritsar's local speech.
