The story

Gufkral is a cave and archaeological site at Banmir village in Tral tehsil, Pulwama district, in the Kashmir Valley, some 41 km southeast of Srinagar. Its name joins guf, cave, and kral, potter, as potters have made use of the caves. These are counted among the oldest caves in Kashmir, with some estimates placing their origin around 2000–3000 BCE.

An Archaeological Survey of India team under A. K. Sharma dug here between August and October 1981. The excavation showed five phases of settlement, running from the Aceramic Neolithic through to the Megalithic period.
