The story

Jwala Ji Temple, also called the Jwalamukhi Temple, is a Hindu shrine at Khrew, a town in Kashmir's Pulwama district. It is dedicated to the goddess Jwala Ji, the family deity of many Kashmiri Hindu families. Kalhana's Rajatarangini knows the village as Khaduvi, records 360 freshwater springs there, and mentions a mystical diagram drawn on a rock on the hillside east of the village.

The present temple was commissioned in the 20th century by Raja Daya Krishna Kaul. Legend says the goddess first showed herself here as a radiant light, and that she stopped the gods at this spot during their quest for Kubera's treasure, agreeing at their request to stay for ever. At the foot of the hill is a holy spring, known as Bod Nag, Anu Nag or Nagabal, where pilgrims wash before entering the temple. The yearly Jwalamukhi Fair, held here in Ashadha, is celebrated by Kashmiri Hindus and Muslims alike.
