01 — The story

The story

Ajmer's Government Museum occupies the Akbari Fort, a 16th-century Mughal building in the city that once served as a residence for a son of the emperor Akbar. Its collections trace the region's past through stone sculpture, weapons, crafts and painting, and the miniature paintings, many showing episodes from the Indian epics, are counted among its finest holdings.

The archaeology section has images of Hindu gods such as Vishnu and Lakshmi Narayan, a Trimurti showing Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva together, and goddess figures including Mahishasuramardini and the Saptamatrikas. Swords and daggers fill the armoury gallery, while separate rooms cover local industry and crafts, and a children's gallery is set up for younger visitors. Marble carving is also well represented.
