The Golaghat Baptist Church is a place of worship in the city of Golaghat, Assam, affiliated with the Assam Baptist Convention. It grew out of the mission of Dr O. L. Swanson, an American who reached Assam with his wife in 1893. With the help of local people he put up the church, which was established in December 1898.
Its story belongs to a wider moment in Upper Assam, where Christianity was spreading in the late 1800s and early 1900s and several church buildings went up. American missionaries called these Indigenous Churches, and the cost of such a building, had it been paid in cash, would have come to ₹1500 at the time. Missionary work was becoming better organised in these years, and that process led to the founding of the church here.
