The story

Durga Devi temple stands at Guhagar, a taluka of Ratnagiri district in Maharashtra. Its story says the goddess overcame evil forces in a single night and so saved Guhagar from destruction. In that battle a pearl fell from one of her ornaments, and she told a devotee to collect it from a tree near the shore. Her killing of the demon Mahishasura gave her the name Mahishasura Mardini.

The temple follows the Panchayatan plan, with the main shrine at the centre of the podium and four lesser shrines at its corners. Around it is a lake with a wooden pillar at its centre.
