Dukh Bhanjani Beri is a jujube (ber) tree on the eastern side of the Amrit Sarovar inside the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar, and is the most revered tree in the city. The name means 'remover of suffering', and the tree is said to be around four hundred years old.
Its story concerns Bibi Rajni, one of five daughters of Duni Chand, a wealthy merchant of Patti. Her father, displeased that she gave her devotion to God rather than to him, married her to a man with leprosy. She brought him to the Guru's settlement, where she cooked in the communal kitchen and left her husband to rest under this tree. He saw crows dip into the pool and fly out changed in colour, bathed there himself, and came out cured. When the couple told Guru Ram Das, the Guru recognised the place as the holy spot foretold by Guru Amar Das, an episode linked with the founding of Amritsar.
