01 — The story

The story

Deeg Palace, often called the Deeg Bhawans, is a complex of royal pavilions in the town of Deeg, about 40 km from Bharatpur. Around 1730 the Jat ruler Badan Singh made Deeg his capital and built a palace here, and his son Surajmal, remembered as the greatest of the Jat kings, ringed it with a strong fort.

The layout follows the Mughal char bagh, a four-part garden plan, set between two large tanks, Rup Sagar and Gopal Sagar. Around it stand separate bhawans or mansions, among them Gopal Bhawan, Suraj Bhawan, Nand Bhawan, Kishan Bhawan and Keshav Bhawan, where Rajput and Mughal forms meet in symmetrical halls, arcades, canals and lawns. The site is quieter than Rajasthan's better-known palaces and appeals especially to those interested in architecture.
