The story

Daria Daulat Bagh, the 'Garden of the Sea of Wealth', is the summer palace Tipu Sultan built in 1784 at Srirangapatna, an island in the Kaveri about 14 km from Mysore, set among gardens. It is in the Deccani style, built mostly of teakwood on a raised rectangular platform, with open corridors and wooden pillars around all four sides.

Every available surface of the walls, pillars, canopies and arches carries colourful frescoes in the Mysore style. The west wall shows Haider Ali and Tipu's victory over Colonel Baillie's English force at Pollilur in 1780, with Baillie anxious in his palanquin and the Nizam's horsemen arriving too late; the east wall shows the courts of Tipu's contemporaries, among them the Raja of Tanjore and Krishnaraja Wodeyar II. The upper floor houses the Tipu Sultan Museum, with his memorabilia, European paintings, Persian manuscripts and Robert Ker Porter's 1800 painting of the storming of Srirangapatna. Nearby are the ruins of Tipu's fort and the Gumbaz with his tomb.
