The Church of the Lord Jesus, known in Bengali as Prabhu Jisur Girja, is a Catholic church at Taltala in central Kolkata. It began as a Presbyterian church: after the 1843 split in the Church of Scotland, the breakaway Free Church of Scotland built its Calcutta place of worship on Wellesley Street. When the two Scottish churches reunited in 1929 the building lost its role, and from 1942 the joint congregation worshipped at St Andrew's Church instead.
In 1969 the church and its buildings passed to the Jesuits, who gave it its present name and made the neighbouring house a centre for Bengali-language pastoral work, including liturgical translation. Chitrabani, a media and social communications centre, followed in 1973, and in 1981 a house where young Jesuits are trained. In 2005 the large church became a parish of the Archdiocese of Calcutta. Most services are held in Bengali, and Easter and Christmas are celebrated on a grand scale.
