Bow Barracks is a block of old barracks in central Kolkata that has become a small residential neighbourhood with its own character. The buildings went up in the early 20th century to house soldiers during the First World War, and the name is usually explained by the bow-like curve of their layout. Once the war ended the flats stood empty, and the government gave them over as homes for Anglo-Indian families.
Anglo-Indians are still the best-known residents, but Chinese, Bengali, Tibetan and Nepali families now live here too. Weathered colonial facades, small markets and local eateries give the lanes the feel of a separate town within the city.
The enclave is at its liveliest in December, when houses put up Christmas trees, stars and nativity scenes, lights are strung across the street and carols are sung; Easter is also celebrated. Home bakers and cafes sell plum cake, rum balls, pies, tarts, roasts and stews.
