The story

Chokhelao Bagh is a royal garden in Jodhpur dating from the 18th century, when Maharaja Abhay Singh ruled Marwar. His queen, Maharani Chokha Bai, is said to have had it made as a private retreat away from the palace, and its symmetrical plan follows the Mughal-influenced style used in Rajput gardens of the period.

The grounds combine planted beds and shade trees with ornamented pavilions and marble fountains, and give an idea of how the Marwar court spent its leisure. The garden also serves as a venue for cultural programmes such as classical music concerts, dance, literary gatherings and art exhibitions, and it is a quiet place in the city for a stroll, a picnic or photography.
