Chembitta Palli, the copper mosque, stands in the Kochangadi area of Mattancherry in Kochi. It was built between 1520 and 1540 in the Kerala-Islamic style, and its roof was once covered in copper tiles, which gave it its name. It lies within the heritage quarter close to Mattancherry Palace.
The compound has three gates, the main one on the east opening towards Jew Street, the Mattancherry Bazaar and Chullickal, and the graveyard by the southern gate holds a few old headstones. Legend says a Jewish merchant heard a Sufi saint, Syed Mau Lana Bukhari Thangal, recite the Old Testament and gave the timber for the mosque's beams. Tamil and Arabic inscriptions sit above the three doors into the prayer hall, and the mosque has long been tied to the Naina family.
