The story

Chateswar Temple, dedicated to Lord Mahadev, is at Kishinapur village near Paga-Gopinathpur in the Salipur area of Cuttack district, Odisha. It is a patalaphuta Shivalinga temple, built by Vishnu, a minister under the Ganga king Ananga Bhima Deva III, whose inscription can also be seen here. Detached sculptures allow the original temple to be dated to the Eastern Ganga period of the 12th century.

The temple is pancharatha on plan, and its bada has horizontal mouldings in many segments. The detached pieces include broken images of Chamunda, Surya and Buddha, a miniature four-armed Vishnu and a Nandi. The main festivals are Shivaratri, Dola Purnima, Kartik Purnima, Margashirsha Purnima and Nabaratra Puja, and large crowds gather on Mondays and Sankranti days. It can be reached by road from Cuttack via Jagatpur.
