The story

Chandramouleesvarar Temple is at Thazhamangai, about 13 km from Thanjavur off the Thanjavur-Kumbakonam road. It is one of the seven Saptamangai sthalams of Chakkarappalli, associated with Indrani. Its legend says Chandra, the moon, favoured only Rohini among Daksha's daughters and ignored her sisters. Daksha's curse made his light wane, and Chandra came here in remorse, worshipped Shiva and was cured, which gives the god his name.

The sanctum is built entirely of brick with no granite, unlike the usual Thanjavur temple style, and the lingam, whose top looks very old, may have been recovered from an earlier ruined building. The goddess Rajarajesvari stands with four arms in a south-facing shrine. The walled compound measures about 15 m by 30 m, and a small tower-like structure was added over the east entrance during the 2008 renovation. A 10th-century Chandikesvarar, a garden around the prakara and the Chandra tank to the east complete the site. Inscriptions call the village Bavadhayamangalam.
