The story

Dayanidheeswarar Temple is a Shiva temple at Vadakurangaduthurai in Thanjavur district, counted among the temples on the northern bank of the Kaveri. Sambandar praised it in his Tevaram hymns. The village name is tied to the Ramayana: when Rama, Hanuman and their monkey companions travelled south, they are said to have crossed the river at a landing here, and Hanuman prayed to Shiva for a safe passage and installed the Dayanidhi lingam. The Tamil name means the port-forest of the northern monkey.

Pregnant women come here seeking a safe delivery. Within its precincts are images of Nataraja, Sivagami, Ardhanareeswarar, Kalabhairava, Surya, Naga, Saneeswara, Brahma, Murugan and Lakshmi. The temple is one of the 88 temples of the Thanjavur Palace Devasthanam, now run by the state's Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department.
