The story

Chakravageswarar Temple, also called Chakramangai, is a Shiva temple at Chakkarappalli in Papanasam taluk, Thanjavur district, on the Thanjavur–Kumbakonam highway beside the Kudamurutti River, 27 km from Kumbakonam and 9 km from Tiruvaiyaru. Praised in the 7th-century Tevaram, it counts among the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams and is one of seven shrines linked with the Saptamatrikas. Saivite tradition holds that Vishnu acquired his discus, the chakra, here, giving the village its name; the Sun is also believed to have worshipped the deity, and each year the sun's rays fall directly on the lingam.

The east-facing temple stands within a brick wall. Its square sanctum holds Chakravageswarar as a lingam beneath a circular two-tiered vimana, with Chola-period dvarapalas at the entrance and images of Durga, Dakshinamurthy and Brahma in the wall niches. Inscriptions of Rajaraja I and Rajendra I record tax exemptions on temple land. Six rituals are held daily, and Panguni Uthiram in March–April is the main festival.
