The story

Chandragad, also called Dhavalgad, is a fort in Raigad district about 182 km from Mumbai, set among forest and hill slopes near the Krishna river valley. It mattered as a lookout over the trade routes through Varandha Ghat between Bhor and the Konkan. Shivaji captured it from Chandrarao More on 15 January 1656, together with Kangori and Rayari. After Sambhaji's death it fell to Itkadar Khan, also known as Zulfikar Khan, one of Aurangzeb's commanders.

The trek begins at Dhavale village in Poladpur taluka, 20 to 25 km from Poladpur, and passes through the small hamlet of Shelarwadi. The top has about 14 rock-cut water tanks, a Shiva linga and a few crumbling buildings.
