The story

Chandola Lake is a circular, embanked reservoir near Dani Limda Road in Ahmedabad, covering 1,200 hectares. Its history reaches back to the time of Asha Bhil, founder of Ashaval. On the Salt March of 1930, Gandhi's party arrived here around nine in the morning after walking seven miles from Sabarmati Ashram, and he stopped beneath a large pipal tree beside the water.

The lake is fed by the Kharicut Canal, one of Gujarat's oldest irrigation schemes, and its water goes to farming and industry. Cormorants, painted storks and spoonbills live here, and people come to stroll along it in the evenings. The lake has suffered from heavy encroachment and a feeder canal choked with rubbish; in April 2025 the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation cleared large areas of illegal construction, and the corporation has drawn up plans to clean and develop the lake.
