The story

Bhaktavatsala Perumal Temple stands at Thirunindravur, a western suburb of Chennai, and is dedicated to Vishnu as Bhaktavatsala Perumal, with Lakshmi as Ennai Petra Thayar. Counted among the 108 Divya Desams, it was praised in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham by the saint Thirumangai Alvar. The Pallavas are believed to have built the temple in the late 8th century, with additions by the Medieval Cholas and the Vijayanagara kings.

A granite wall encloses all the shrines and two water bodies, and the entrance is through a four-tiered gopuram. Temple legend says Vishnu appeared here to Kubera and that Varuna, god of the waters, worshipped here, and the town's name is said to come from Vishnu and Lakshmi staying here on their way back. Another story tells that Thirumangai Alvar passed by without singing, so Lakshmi asked the god to follow him, and the saint at last praised Bhaktavatsala in a vision at Thirukannamangai.
