The story

Anna Nagar Ayyappan Koil is a Kerala-style temple to Ayyappan in Chennai, where 6th Main Road meets 2nd Avenue in Anna Nagar, near the Visveswarayya Tower. It grew out of an annual lamp puja held by devotees in the new Shanti Colony; they formed the Sri Ayyappa Seva Samajam in 1976 and were given land by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board in 1979. After years in a thatched shed, the permanent temple, designed with the temple architect Kanipayyur Krishnan Namboodiri, was consecrated on 13 May 1984.

The west-facing sanctum holds a panchaloha image of Ayyappan, with shrines for Ganesha, Murugan, Durga, Anjaneya, the Navagrahas and Nagaraja. A Natamandapam with a gopuram was added in 1989, and the flagstaff was covered in gold in 2005. An auditorium in the Koothambalam style hosts discourses and cultural programmes. Kerala Namboodiris conduct the pujas, the annual festival falls in the second week of December, and the Arattu procession carries the deity to Marina Beach.
