01 — The story

The story

Badshahpur Fort in Gurugram is traced to the 18th century and the rule of Emperor Aurangzeb, when it was built as a strategic post to defend the empire's northern territories. Rival powers fought over it in later centuries and it changed hands several times. Its weathered walls and broken battlements still stand, along with the remains of royal rooms, barracks and administrative buildings, grand gateways and domed structures. Red sandstone and marble were used in its construction.

The Badshahpur Baoli, a stepwell close to the fort, was the garrison's water source. Flights of steps carved with ornate patterns lead down to a reservoir at the bottom, and its walls are now covered in moss.
