Arna Jharna is an open-air museum of desert life at Moklawas village in Jodhpur district. It was conceived by Komal Kothari, a folklorist and ethnomusicologist, and opened in 2000 on a site of about 10 acres that takes in rocky ground, protected woodland, sacred spots and small ponds.
Instead of air-conditioned galleries, exhibits sit in earth-red buildings made the way local villagers build. The best-known display is a large collection of brooms, with videos on how they are made and by which communities. Musical instruments from western India, pottery and puppetry are also shown, and the grounds are planted with more than 30 kinds of native trees and shrubs.
