The story

Arikady Fort, also called Kumbla Fort, sits on a low laterite hill beside the Arikady River, on its right bank, about 1 km from Kumbla on NH 66 in Kasaragod district. A Hanuman temple stands just below it. The South Canara Manual says the Keladi Nayakas built several forts in the Hosdurg–Kasaragod area, and records credit this one to Hiriya Venkadappa Nayak of Ikkeri in 1608, a Kannada inscription at the entrance once confirming the Nayak's role.

Other stories are also told: that Tipu Sultan built it, that it was the seat of the Kumbala dynasty, or that it dates from the Kolathiri Rajas and was rebuilt by the Ikkeri Nayakas. In 2015 a University of Kerala team excavating here found a large hall, perhaps used for gatherings, along with roof tiles, local and Chinese pottery, lead bullets and the moulds used to cast them.
