The story

The Malik Dinar Mosque, officially the Hazrath Malik Deenar Grand Juma Masjid, stands at Thalangara in Kasaragod. Tradition credits its founding to Malik Dinar and its completion to 13 Rajab, 22 AH, or 642-643 CE, which would make it one of the oldest mosques in India. It belongs to a group of early west-coast mosques, among them those at Kodungallur, Kollam and Mangalore, said to have been built in his era.

The two-storey building was raised in the traditional Kerala-Islamic style, renovated in 1809 and thoroughly remodelled in 2018. It holds the dargah of Malik Dinar, regarded as a companion of the Prophet, which makes it a prominent Muslim pilgrimage centre in the district. The complex also includes a madrasa, a cemetery and an orphanage.
