The story

Anikkattilammakshethram is a Hindu temple in Anicadu village, 3.5 km from the town of Mallappally, Pathanamthitta district, on the bank of the Manimala river. It is estimated to be about 1,600 years old, from the early days of the Edapally dynasty. Shiva and Parvati are worshipped with equal standing in a single sreekovil, a rare arrangement in Kerala; their idols, each about 4 feet tall, stand side by side, Shiva as the hunter Kiratha with bow and arrow and Parvati holding a sword. Shrines in the courtyard honour Shiva, Bhadra, Nagaraja and others.

The goddess is believed by devotees, many of them women, to grant children and prosperity. The eight-day festival in Kumbham (February–March) ends on Pooram day with the Pongala, when thousands of women cook rice porridge in earthen pots as an offering; the crowd spills out of the temple grounds onto the roads for about 2 km around. The temple is 17 km from Thiruvalla railway station.
