The story

Ambenali Ghat is a mountain road in the northern Western Ghats of Maharashtra, described as the longest ghat in the state. As State Highway 72 it runs for about 40 km between Mahabaleshwar in Satara district and Poladpur in Raigad district, linking the Deccan plateau with the Konkan, with many turns on the way.

The road begins near Bombay Point, drops 500 metres to the vicinity of Pratapgad fort, then another 500 metres into the Konkan near Payatewadi, where it meets the Mumbai–Goa road. Pratapgad and Kamalgad forts guarded it in earlier times. It crosses the Javali forest, where animals such as leopards are seen, and its scenery draws tourists. It also has a reputation for accidents, is classed as landslide-prone, and is sometimes closed during the monsoon for safety reasons.
