The story

The stepwell at Ambapur village lies close to Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat. It carries no inscription, but it is believed to date from the 15th century. The vav, as such wells are called in Gujarati, is intricately carved and goes five storeys deep.

Stepwells like this were once central to life in Gujarat's semi-arid regions, supplying water for drinking, washing and bathing, and they also served as places for festivals and sacred rituals.
