The story

The Akhund Mulla Shah Mosque, also called the Dara Shikoh Masjid, is a former mosque in Srinagar, now partly in ruins and protected as a Monument of National Importance. The Mughal prince Dara Shikoh had it built in 1649 for his spiritual guide, Akhund Mulla Shah, whose name it carries.

Its plan is unusual: it is in effect a mosque within a mosque. The main sanctuary stands apart from the outer building, separated from it by a courtyard that runs all the way round, and a stone lotus crowns its podium. The building goes by several other names as well, among them the Akhoon Mullah Masjid and the Mala Shah Masjid.
