01 — The story

The story

Ajaygarh Fort, also spelt Ajaigarh, stands on a Vindhya hilltop about 60 km from Khajuraho. It was a stronghold of the Chandelas, a Rajput clan who ruled most of Bundelkhand, then called Jejakabhukti, from the 9th to the 13th century, and it served as both a military defence and an administrative seat. About 500 steep steps lead up to the entrance, which overlooks the Ken River.

Of the fort's five original gates, two still stand, along with walls of large stone blocks and bastions. Inside are ruins of Chandela palaces and courtyards, a ruined temple attributed to Raja Parmardi Deva, and three ruined Jain temples in the Khajuraho style. Two rock-cut tanks, Ganga and Yamuna, lie near the northern gate, and a lake called Ajay Palka Talav sits at the centre of the complex.
