The Brahma Temple, from around 900 AD, ranks among the oldest buildings at Khajuraho. It belongs to the Eastern Group and sits beside Khajur Lake, also called Khajuraho Sagar. Despite the name, its sanctum holds a four-faced Shiva linga that has long been mistaken for an image of Brahma. Its design closely follows that of the nearby Lalguan Mahadeva Temple, both dating from a transitional phase of Chandela building.
By Khajuraho standards the temple is plain: a square shrine with a pyramidal roof on a raised platform, its sandstone shikhara set on a granite base. Carved lattice windows project from the north and south walls. Figures of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva frame the doorway, with the river goddesses Ganga and Yamuna at its foot.
