On the eastern side of Khajuraho, about 2 km from the Western Group, stands a cluster of Jain temples that form part of the Eastern Group. Unlike most temples in the town, these remain places of active prayer and worship. Khajuraho appears to have had a sizeable Jain community in the Chandela period, probably living in this eastern part of the town.
Several Jain temples in the area are in varying states of ruin, but most of those still in use are grouped inside a walled compound whose outer wall dates from the 19th century. As elsewhere in Khajuraho, some sculptures here are erotic, and many show the shardul, a mythical beast.
