01 — The story

The story

The Jama Masjid is one of Chanderi's oldest and best-known religious buildings, standing opposite the Badal Mahal Gate. It is still used for prayer. The plan is a familiar one: an open courtyard with pillared cloisters on its sides and a prayer hall along the western end.

The mosque has three domes and no minarets, which sets it apart from many mosques in North India. Its carved entrances, geometric and floral patterns and fine stonework follow the craft tradition seen across Chanderi. Inscribed stone slabs and fragments reused from older buildings point to earlier regional structures. The mosque lies within Chanderi's compact heritage core, close to its other monuments.
