The story

Adichikkavu Sree Durga Devi Kshetram, also called Adichikavu Devi Temple, is dedicated to the goddess Sree Vana Durga and is among the oldest temples of Pandanad village in Chengannur taluk, Alappuzha district. Chengannur lies about 6 km to the east and Mannar about 4 km to the west.

Its chief feature is a sreekovil built without a roof, made specially for Vana Durga. The complex also has an anakottil and a sapthaha mandapam on its north-west side, with shrines to Yakshiamma, Nagaraja, Nagayakshi and Brahmarakshas. The main festival, Pathamudayam, runs for ten days from Vishu and ends on 23 April with celebrations lasting all night. Before it comes Parayeduppu, when the goddess visits homes around Pandanad. Women also gather each year for Pongala, cooking rice with jaggery, ghee and coconut in small pots, and seven-day Sapthaham and nine-day Navaha recitals are held with meals for devotees.
