The story

The Thrichittatt Mahavishnu Temple, also called Thiruchenkundrur, is in Chengannur, Alappuzha district. Built in the Kerala style, it is dedicated to Krishna, an avatar of Vishnu, worshipped as Imayavarappan, and is one of the 108 Divya Desams, sung by the 8th-century Alvar saint Nammalvar.

It is one of five ancient shrines around Chengannur tied to the Mahabharata, each said to have been founded by one of the Pandavas when, after crowning Parikshit, they went on pilgrimage and reached the Pamba. This one is credited to Yudhishthira. According to local legend he did penance here for the only lie of his life, told in the Kurukshetra war to defeat his teacher Drona. The devas are said to have come here before him, which is why the deity is called Imayavarappar. The Travancore Devaswom Board runs the temple, and the nearest railway station is at Chengannur.
