The story

Wasif Manzil, also called Wasef Manzil or the New Palace, stands within the Nizamat Fort campus in Murshidabad, near the Hazarduari Palace. Nawab Wasif Ali Mirza Khan had it built as his residence, with the work directed by Mr Vivian of the Public Works Department's Nadia Rivers Division and the Bengali engineer Surendra Barat.

The earthquake of 12 June 1897 brought down the whole second floor within seconds, and the palace was repaired without it. The Archaeological Survey of India now looks after the building, which has become a museum. A garden with a fountain and marble statues lies in front behind iron railings, the main entrance is a Norman arch with open-work iron doors, and the staircases and statues inside are of marble.
